The Work You'll Be Doing In this role, you will: Set up and operate manual and CNC machining equipment Machine precision components used in U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and submarines Work with lathes, mills, vertical machining centers, and horizontal boring mills Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work instructions Troubleshoot machining operations and adjust processes when needed Verify dimensions using precision measuring equipment Perform first-piece and in-process inspections Work alongside skilled machinists, maintenance teams, and production leadership in a large industrial shipyard Machines, Controls & Equipment You'll work with equipment including: Machines CNC Lathes CNC Mills Vertical Machining Centers Horizontal Boring Mills Manual Lathes Manual Mills Inspection Equipment Calipers Micrometers Precision Measuring Instruments Blueprint & Dimensional Inspection Tools Materials You'll Work With Carbon Steel Alloy Steel Stainless Steel Large Structural Components Naval Manufacturing Materials What We're Looking ForRequired 3+ years of CNC or manual machining experience Experience operating manual and/or CNC equipment Strong blueprint reading skills Good math and problem-solving abilities Ability to troubleshoot machining operations Comfortable working in a large industrial manufacturing environment Able to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in varying weather conditions Safety-minded with strong attention to quality U.S. Citizenship Required Preferred Experience in: Automotive Repair Plant Maintenance Machinery Installation or Repair Technical education in: Machining Diesel Technology HVAC Automotive Technology Mechanical Trades Why Machinists Choose Newport News Shipbuilding Few machining careers offer the opportunity to build products that directly support national defense.
